WHAT’S THE ART OF SAMPLING and What’s in the 3RD EDITION?

The Art of Sampling, 3rd Edition is the largest, most comprehensive study ever written on music sampling and copyright law, and it’s the definitive book on sampling in the hip hop/rap music tradition. Detailed, sharply informative, engaging, and intensely thought-provoking, The Art of Sampling, 3rd Edition is one of the most striking and poignant music studies in recent history.

What’s inside The Art of Sampling, 3rd Edition? First, you should know: This is figuratively and literally a Big Book! It contains 1768 pages and 27 chapters, and it includes an extensive index that’s perfect for music makers, educators, scholars, and hip hop/rap fans alike.  The specifications tell you it’s a substantial and comprehensive book.

Having completed final production of The Art of Sampling, 3rd Edition, all that’s left is to print copies. At 1768 total pages, the size and nature of this book requires a custom print run. The per-book printing cost is $25, and the initial print run will be 1,000 copies; that equals $25,000 for the printing. Thus, my goal is to raise $25,000.

PRAISE FOR  THE ART OF SAMPLING

“When I started reading The Art of Sampling  I was excited to get a deeper look at the history and execution of the art form. To be clear, the book more than delivers in that regard. Said offers up a very clear trajectory of hip hop production and sampling, from Kool Herc to the current trap music trend, that will help hip hop lovers understand how their favorite genre has grown and changed over the years. But what truly blew my mind open and inspired me to write this review was the book’s closing third, when Said breaks down the current state of fair use and copyright law. On its surface it sounds like a dry topic, but Said’s writing really helped me understand just how dramatically copyright’s original purpose [has] been hijacked by big business, and how copyright and fair use is now intertwined with all of our lives.”

—Nathan Slavik

“An incisive work of scholarship, equally valuable for its insights into process, nuanced musicology and its groundbreaking legal analysis.”

—Adam Mansbach

“A book that not only proves sampling is a legitimate art form, but uses sampling as a lens to show just how distorted copyright law’s original intentions have become…a must read for anyone interested in art, business and free speech…”

—DJ Booth

“While The Art Of Sampling is essentially a hip-hop textbook, breaking down one of the genre’s most important pillars, sampling, Amir Said’s 30-plus years of experience gives this book a much more detailed, close and alive feel than any textbook. Not only does Said break sampling down to its most basic forms…but he also widens his lens to explore the legal side of sampling, explaining the often confusing world of copyright law and fair use in ways the average person can understand. If you are an artist, producer, in the music industry or simply a fascinated observer, The Art of Sampling has something for you…Ultimately, by making the book so comprehensive, Said has created a great resource for anyone in the sampling world.”
